At the Waterloo Region District School Board (WRDSB), we know teaching and curriculum are the foundation for student success. We also know that the spaces where students learn matter for their growth and development.
That is why this monthly feature will highlight the different spaces across the WRDSB that help students learn, connect and grow independently.
From collaborative study areas to creative and innovative spaces, each featured element helps students succeed. The hard work of our Facility Services team shows our commitment to building a system where all students are provided with the opportunities to access their chosen pathway in learning and life.
Multi-School – LED Lights

Why it Shines
The WRDSB Facilities team has been working to replace fluorescent lamps with energy‑efficient LED lighting across board sites.
These upgrades are a key part of the WRDSB’s sustainability commitments and support ongoing efforts to improve energy conservation.
“LED lamps use a third of the electricity as traditional fluorescent lamps. In addition to reducing energy use and operating costs, they also require significantly less maintenance because they have a longer lifespan and require fewer operating components,” says Caleb Gingrich Regehr, Supervisor of Energy Conservation.
Since 2020, more than 95,000 lamps have been replaced across 95 sites. This has reduced WRDSB electricity consumption by more than four million kilowatt-hours (kWh), or approximately 8%.
These energy savings total more than $700,000 per year, which can be reinvested to further support student achievement and well-being.
